Since no one in my circle of friends loves collecting toys as I do (or at all), I’ve decided to write about my recent purchases and send the article out into the wilds of the internet.
Let’s start with my latest obsession, mini vinyl figures. Above is a box from the Game of Thrones series. I admit I’m not a fan of the series or the books — I did read “The World of Ice and Fire” because I’m interested in world building. And, okay, I read the first book back in the day and watched the first season of the show when it came out. Ned’s death really makes me angry, and my subsequently learning about all the other good characters in the series dying makes me never want to read the books or watch the series ever again. Although I do take a morbid interest in reading Tor.com and their ongoing series of articles called “A Read of Ice and Fire” (link here). And an unhealthy interest in whatever fan theories are about.
But enough about that – let’s talk toys! OMG, I love the figures in this series and in the second series! Funko has produced some incredible toys in their regular line, but their minis are fantastic in their own way too.
Here’s the series one and series two boxes side by side. Is it a coincidence both boxes feature fan-favorites Tyrion Lannister and Jon Snow? I don’t think so! And Tyrion has his axe on one and his crossbow on the other! Heh! I have Tyrion with his axe, which is what made me continue to collect the series after my initial purchase:
Here he is with Grey Wind (cue sobbing), looking like the tiny badass we love. They’re both on my revamped desk (pictures later.) Meowth has decided to photobomb this shot — curse you Team Rocket! (shakes fist )
Onto the unboxing — and the series one figure is…
OMG, IT’S NED! (Cue massive sobbing…)
Ned’s holding his sword, Ice, and wearing his “the man who passes the sentence should swing the sword” Ned face. (Sean Bean was brilliant in the part. Just brilliant .
After alternately dancing around with joy for getting this figure, and cursing GRRM for killing him off, I opened the figure from series two:
Gah! It’s a wight! Although, I must admit it’s the cutest little ice zombie I’ve ever seen. The detail on the mini vinyls is incredible – I can’t get it with my camera, but the you can see the bones on the wight’s ribs and on the back of the figure, you can see it’s vertebrae — still cute!
A few weeks later, I got another series one figure:
OMG, IT’S ROBB! Are you trying to kill me, Funko? (Cue more sobbing.)
(“Relive your most traumatic moments from the GOT series with Funko toys!” What do you mean, you don’t want that as your new slogan, Funko?)
So here is my GOT collection as it stands:
The dead (cue sobbing), the alive and the undead.
(Curse you, Team Rocket! Stop photobombing my pictures! You too, Magic Eight ball!)
